Suspicious Bill

Hi ,

I just signed a petition asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill from being passed.

This bill will create a body which will single-handedly clear all genetically modified (GM) crops. Public opposition made the Karnataka government ban field trials of GM crops in the state recently. Now we need to get the national government to stop this bill.

Our government is working on a disastrous recipe. It’s a bill that will place genetically modified (GM) food on our plates, without our knowledge.

The Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill can be tabled anytime in this monsoon session of Parliament. The bill, which is not even public, is being pushed in a hasty and secretive fashion. According to an earlier version leaked by the media, the bill will create a centralised non transparent body which will become the sole approver for GM crops. ^[1]

By being secretive, the government is only creating more suspicion about the intention of the bill. Public opposition helped stop Bt Brinjal, last year.^[2] Now we need to get the national government to stop this bill and save our food.

You should ask Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop this bill because it is not transparent.

Opposition from people against GM crops in Karnataka made the government declare a ban on the field trials of GM crops in the state. ^[3] This can be achieved again. Support from lakhs of people will help put pressure on the PM to stop this bill.

The last known draft of the bill had a clause which allowed BRAI to escape the purview of Right to Information.^[4] If the bill is passed as is, we will not be able to stop genetic modification of 56 other crops in the pipeline.

Stand up against coal and they put you in jail! Activist Ramesh Agrawal and Dr. Harihar Patel were arrested and Mr. Agrawal was even inhumanly chained to his hospital bed for exposing an environmental violation in Chattisgarh.^[1]

Mr. Agrawal and Dr. Patel exposed irregularities in the environmental clearance process for a coal fired thermal power plant being built by the Jindal group in Raigarh.^[2] In return, they have been arrested on false charges. Their first two appeals for bail have been denied. A third bail plea will be heard at the Chattisgarh high court this week.

This is a struggle to save our environment from permanent damage. We need to act fast to help free Mr. Agrawal and Dr. Patel.The Chattisgarh Chief Minister, Raman Singh needs to know that people across the country support brave activists like Ramesh Agrawal and Harihar Patel.

A Group of Ministers entrusted with the task of choosing between the last remaining forests of central and eastern India and coal,^[3] will meet next month to discuss this.

There are renewable energy ^[4] and energy efficiency measures can help meet our needs. Instead of looking at the alternatives the government is trying to gag those who are trying to stand up against coal, to save our environment and forests. Speak up now! Ask CM Raman Singh to free activists Ramesh Agrawal and Dr Harihar Patel.

One killed and eight injured. The protests against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear plant in Maharashtra have taken a grave turn.^[1] Violence does not result in anything good, and must be condemned in any situation.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, however, is adamant about setting up this project. ^[2] Jaitapur is in an earthquake prone zone ^[3] and the technology being used here is still under review in the UK and USA.[4] For the past one year, the government of Maharashtra has used force to suppress the a non-violent and democratic struggle of the people against the proposed plant.

Mr. Chavan needs to listen to his people. He needs to know that he cannot build Jaitapur against the people's will when alternatives exist. We will deliver this petition to him on April 26, 2011, the 25th anniversary of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine.^[5]

You should sign this petition asking CM Prithviraj Chavan to scrap the nuclear reactors in Jaitapur.

Citizens across the country, and some international governments ^[6] are questioning the need for nuclear power. A large number of signatures will help show the CM that people across the country oppose the Jaitapur nuclear plant. It will help put pressure on him to stop the project.

Clean and safe renewable energy and energy efficiency can help us meet our power needs. We need to invest more in these, instead of dangerous nuclear technology.

Even after 25 years, Chernobyl is not completely free of radiation.^[7] CM Chavan is putting the environment and the lives of current and future generations at risk. Ask him to scrap the project now!
